College professor Eva Campbell is at the end of her rope. Her cheating ex playing a piano on the quad is only the most attention-getting stunt in his ongoing campaign to try to get her back. When she threatens to set the piano on fire, firefighter Sean Hannigan is one of the first responders on the scene. He talks her down and they have an immediate connection. Sean's friend suggests Sean offer to be Eva's fake boyfriend to get the ex to give up on trying to get her back. Eva reluctantly agrees to this plan and they start spending time together at her work events and other places where they will be observed.

The connection that starts as fake eventually turns real. But when Eva meets Sean's family and sees how great he is with his nieces and nephews, she needs them to take a break so he can figure out whether or not being a dad is important to him, since Eva is over forty and doesn't want children.

When the police have to be called to get her ex off her property, Sean is devastated that Eva doesn't tell him and thinks the break might have been a pretext for a more permanent separation. Then, when he's injured on the job, his sister calls Eva to ask her to come to the hospital and Eva confesses that she loves him as he's waking up from anesthesia. They reconnect and he moves in with her while he recovers, eventually moving in permanently and proposing.
